At Jesus' Feet...

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

…Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10: 38-42 NLT)

Oh, how many times have I been Martha, especially leading up to Thanksgiving. You know the scene where the day before and the day of Thanksgiving you find yourself distracted by the ‘big dinner’ you are preparing. So much so that you turn into a drill sergeant commanding all those around you... because of course, the house must be clean, the decorations must be exactly right and the food, well the food has to be amazing and well-timed so that the spread could be displayed as the guests arrive. And there you are with the guests finally gathered around the table, everything on the outside turned out just as you had meticulously planned and as you sit down, you realize that you are not even hungry but rather exhausted!

Now, stop and breathe (because I am right now!). What if we Martha's this year take a pause to reset on how we do this ‘big dinner’ called Thanksgiving? What if we would sit at the Lord’s feet more than be on our feet? What if the spread that we focus on is not on food for our bodies but rather on food for our souls? What if we simply remain at His feet this Thanksgiving, gathered around our loved ones both far and near (thanks to technology) and we feast … I mean truly feast on all that He has done this past year in our lives.

I do not know about you, but this year I am trading in my Martha apron and instead will take a seat at His feet.
